TBI and Bicycle Accidents
Bicycling is a fun, clean, affordable, and healthy mode of transportation that over 80 million people take part in each year. In fact, 30% of the U.S. population rides some sort of bicycle and 45% of bicycle owners ride it occasionally. Yet, riding a bike does come with its dangers and risks. Over 600 bicyclists a year die on the roads. However, bicycle related injuries can be prevented.
The most common injury from a bike related accident is TBI - traumatic brain injury. These injuries not only account for 67% of bicycle-related admissions to hospitals, but also for over 62% of bicycle-related deaths. These numbers are staggering on their own considering that traumatic brain injuries are not only deadly, but can also be a debilitating affliction that comes with a long rehabilitation and care from specialty facilities like CareMerdian. However, these numbers are even more astounding when taking into account that wearing a bicycle helmet could easily prevent TBI.
Wearing a bicycle helmet is not something that every bicyclist should do, but rather is something that every bicyclist must do. Wearing a helmet reduces the risk of a TBI by almost 90%, thus practically eradicating the instance of TBI as a result of a collision. Most states do require that cyclists wear a helmet when riding, but unfortunately most children (and almost all teenagers) ride without one. Yet, with the life long damage that is caused from TBI it is not only important that a helmet is worn, but it’s vital. Helmets ensure that riding a bike is not only a fun, healthy, and affordable mode of transportation, but also is a safe one.
